The Pubs
For those of you who class entertainment as consuming vast amounts of alcohol, there is something for you as well. No less than four pubs are situated around the village, all serving perfectly good food and drink depending on your preferred level of hygiene. A popular choice is the Fox and Grapes, a recently refurbished old coaching inn that serves good food, reasonably cheap ale and always has someone in there ready to talk or listen to you.

Punch Taverns - Best drinks Experience
Hawarden Pub Has Best Drinks in North Wales!
A Hawarden pub has been recognised for delivering the best drinks to customers in North Wales.

Punch Taverns, the largest pub company in the UK, have rewarded the Fox and Grapes, Hawarden with a 2008 Shine Award – which commends those truly exceptional pubs from its 8,400 strong estate.

Licensees Sean and Kimberley McGibbon won the ‘Best Drinks Experience’ category and were presented with their award at a prestigious ceremony earlier this week at the Rookery Hall, Cheshire.

The Fox and Grapes fought off tough competition from 12 other regional finalists who had been short listed from over a 1000 pubs, nominated from all over the UK.

The judges gave particular praise to the ‘presentation, cleanliness and high standards’ of the pub and also commended the ‘great selection and range of drinks’.

Punch’s regional operations director Andy Hodgson commented: "What a fantastic event and a great opportunity to recognise these truly outstanding pubs. We received over 100 nominations in this region so to be crowned category winners is an exceptional achievement – well done!”.

And licensees Sean and Kimberley McGibbon are delighted with the accolade: “It was a big surprise to win, especially as we’ve only worked in the trade for 2 years. It’s a great achievement for all of our staff who work hard to deliver a really high quality experience for our customers.”

As well as their trophy, Sean and Kimberley also received a £500 gift experience voucher.

Punch Taverns is the UK’s largest pub operator with more than 8,400 leased, tenanted and managed outlets.

Cask Marque award
The Cask Marque Trust is a national independent, non-profit making organisation formed to raise the standard of cask ale served to customers. The Fox and Grapes has been awarded the Cask Marque Plaque, who checked all cask ales on sale for temperature, appearance, taste and aroma. We are regulary inspected to ensure our high standards are maintained.

About the Cask Marque Award Scheme. How will the scheme work?
The scheme is operated by an independent body called Cask Marque Trust which is a limited company, limited by guarantee, and a non profit making organisation. The company is run by a management committee elected by its members. The members who pay a subscription will include representatives from brewers, retailers, trade bodies and consumer groups.
Pubs that join the scheme will be visited unannounced by an independent assessor twice a year. In the first year they will be visited twice in the first three months and in subsequent years they will be visited once in the Summer and once in the Winter.

The assessor will check all cask ales on sale for - temperature, appearance, aroma and taste.
If the pub passes it receives a plaque, framed certificate and merchandising material to inform its customers of the award and their rights.
The customers are encouraged to comment independently on the quality of cask ale in the pub to the Cask Marque organisation.
Cask Marque Stands for:
  • Excellence in the service of cask ale.
  • Awarded to the licensee rather than to the pub.
  • Jointly funded by brewers and retailers.
  • Inspections made twice a year.
